Wow, that's really bad!
It looks like it's at an opposite angle from the sun, i.e. mirrored image. Would that make the problem optical (i.e. thus not an internal reflection from film transport roller or similar), i.e. something in the lens, shutter or aperture? I wonder what inside the camera could make the circle and cross appear on the film. The other shot you posted had the effect in a different area, right? 

Maybe you got to close to the Pope while out shooting?
