I'm confused. Isn't the purpose of glass to hold the neg flat and in the focal plane?

We failed to ask Elias whether the rings are linked to the components of the image or are closer to the size of the negative.

I was assuming they were related to the image structure. Perhaps this is not the case. If the rings are not around image elements my comments may not be applicable.
