Yes, folks, I puzzled through this as well as did you. I suspect that AN means "anti-Newton". Damn, folks, but I viscerally HATE acronyms and initialisms.

I have nothing to offer Brother Elias. In a half-century of darkroom work, I have never once encountered Newton's Rings.
