I should clarify - changing the speeds between B-1/250 does not really
cause appreciable wear on the speed ring cammed surface in my opinion.
I would not hesitate to change these speeds after cocking - the camera
was designed to be operated this way, except 1/500 in the early models.
Its the force of the spring on the speed ring thats pretty high. You can feel how much force is needed to move the speed ring to 1/500th when the shutter is cocked. My warning about jammed springs is not theoretical, I've had it happen. Going down from 1/500th is not a big deal but still takes some force.
BTW, these are _very_ good illustrations of the insides of the shutter.
