Bill, Thanks for the update! It is a shame, but also the way of the world, that too often, as you suggest, good things do not come easily. We all know that the establishment of the Regional Academy will be a break-through good thing. We know there are challenges facing this venture and appreciate the thoughtfully considered process that has been working its way through them. Many thanks to you and to Tom Frey and Bryan Hetherington. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to move things forward. Due to the significant changes in City government, large legislative hurdles in Albany, the exit of the commissioner of education and the departure of the superintendent of RCSD, progress is much slower than we would like. Tom Frey, Bryan Hetherington and I have been working the back room on a very regular basis for the last 11 months. We had a meeting with RCSD personnel this week and are scheduling a meeting with Bolgen Vargas to pave a path for the Regional Academy. Politics always plays a role in converting the sacred into the profane. We continue to maintain optimism that the legislative bill that has been drafted will become reality. Not an easy task. Good things do not come easily. If we believe in what we have created for the benefit of children, then we must continue pushing forward. We can NEVER abandon the hopes, dreams and futures of our kids. I just read a book, Bringing Adam Home. The book is about the kidnapping and brutal murder of Adam Walsh in 1981. I think most of us know the case and his father who, as a result of this horrific crime, became the host of America’s Most Wanted. I was taken by the persistence of a Florida detective, Joe Matthews who after 25 years, solved the case in 2006. While I’m not expecting 25 years to pass before the opening of the Regional Academy, I am confident that persistence will essential and that we will prevail. As many of you know who spent so much time defining the Regional Academy, the Regional Academy is about social justice and civil rights. None of these important issues happened overnight or without significant pain and suffering. I keep the Frederick Douglass quote ever present, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”. The struggle continues!! In September, we are planning a meeting of the group leaders for a progress update and strategy session. We will keep you informed. Also, please feel free to contact me. Peace and Hope. Bill
