THE HOLY CROSS BLIND OUTREACH NEWSLETTER Holy Cross Lutheran Church 2003 NE Englewood Road Kansas City, MO 6418 Xxxxxx In this edition: GREETINGS WHAT’S UP FOR DISCUSSION? JAWS 13.0 SPECIAL NOTES THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS ANNOUNCEMENTS and Reminders CCOMMUNITY CALENDAR Xxxxxx GREETINGS It has been a busy last week and a half. My travels have taken me from Joplin to Kansas City, from Alphapointe, to home and all points in between. My phone was lost, destroyed, newly bought, and the old one found. And, in the middle of all this, God’s provision awes me. WE who are blind are familiar with confusion and loss in different ways sometimes than our sighted counterparts. Stuff happens when we forget where things are and can’t see that extra sock or lost suitcase. A dollar bill or debit card might wind up in the wrong place because it has, unawares, slipped from our hands. Sometimes, we lose our footing for reasons different than our friends and neighbors. We may wander off away from because we don’t see the signs or the sound of traffic gets confusing. Yet, amid stuff of earth and our lives, our Lord still promises to give us what we need. Sometimes, that seems hard to understand when friends and relatives die or people such as Richard Solis or Baby Lisa can’t be found. Our Lord does not, per se, call us to measure the evidenced of His promise by the goodness or badness of circumstances around us. Our fortunes—good or bad—shift on a dime. We’re tempted to blame God for that. Yet, His promise to work all things together for our good remains as He keeps us steadfast in His love. Our Lord often uses misfortune and tragedy as a blessing—whether witnessing to us or through us to others. Tragedies or even losses of property and money are not curses. They are not God’s punishment as far as we can see. Our heavenly Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take guilt and our punishment on Himself at Calvary. That means that no matter how messy our lives get or how confusing our travels and turns may become, our Lord always holds us in His hand of grace. We may not always recover lost stuff. We may not always manage our time well. Yet, our Lord still gives us time and the necessities of life as He keeps us in His Word. Prayer. Heavenly Father, we do not understand why people, especially babies, go missing. We don’t grasp why we lose time and priorities and get frustrated. We try to stand and yet we aoften fall into doubting Your promise. Forgive us, Lord. Restore us and preserve us as we seek to do Your will until You come again; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen. Xxxxxx WHAT’S UP FOR DISCUSSION We are certainly thankful for those who help with putting our meal of the month together for the blind community. In a very real way, we rely on their provision for two hours or more when we get together. Is depending others easy or normal for us? When do we let ourselves depend on sighted assistance? When do we not? Dependence on others is a very real challenge for many of us at meals of the month, when traveling, when asking for help with an issue at home? This month, we will discuss our blindness, trust, and levels of dependence on others. Xxxxxx JAWS 13.0 Now Available (taken from a Freedom Scientific email updated) “Freedom Scientific today announced the release of JAWS for Windows version 13, including Convenient OCR, a feature that performs Optical Character Recognition on text that is displayed as an image, thereby enabling blind computer users to read items that were previously inaccessible.” "This release represents a huge step in accessibility for screen reader users,â€? says Eric Damery, Vice President of Software Product Management for Freedom Scientific.” “The upgrade is an SMA release and can be downloaded as either a 32-bit or 64-bit version from the JAWS downloads page ( http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-downloads.a sp). DVD shipments to SMA holders and new product customers will commence on Nov 1, 2011.” Note: You can also speak with your RSB counselor to see if TAP-I may be able to cover your purchase of JAWS 13.0. Xxxxxx THANKS TO THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER This month we express our gratitude for those who help with our meals of the month. They give their time to drive, cook, clean, provide other assistance for us as needed. It is important to thank folks who assist us, both at meals and elsewhere in our daily lives. NO matter how independent we may be, we who are blind or visually impaired receive some level of service from friends, drivers, family, just as we may give it to them from time to time. A parting “thank you” goes a long way in building relationships, trust, and ongoing cordiality—even in times we don’t feel so thankful. Xxxxx SPECIAL NOTE: 1.
