For folks wanting an alternative on MS Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
Lightzone <http://lightzoneproject.org/> has gone open source.
Lightzone is more of a Lightroom or Aperture style program than a
pixel editor.

They recently released version 4.0 for MS Windows, and Linux, and are
beta testing the Mac OS X version. I'm using the original commercial
version on Mac OS X, mostly because I haven't had time to keep up to
date with the beta.
