Quoting St. Ansel:

"Enlargement in most people's minds is limited only by the clarity and the
quality of the negative image. Composition, Texture, size and form of subject,
and distance of viewing the enlargement are all factors that are of supreme
importance. Stieglitz has a marvelous photograph of a cobweb and grass with
dew, the print of which is about 2 1/4x 3 1/2 inches in size. Probably it could
be enlarged to 11x14 and keep excellent definition, but the actual size of the
print, small as it is, conveys the delicacy and the mood of the subject as a
larger print from the same negative could not do. Photographers as a group are
"salon-minded," making prints too large and too consistently of the same size
regardless of the more subtle inherent qualities of the subject and its
treatment. They are concerned more wit the conventional response of salon
juries than they are with their own personal creative expression." (from
Graphic Graflex Photography copyright 1947 by Morgan and Lester. Page 74)

St. Speedy (me) says that you choose your film format based on the size of the
potential print. You choose your print size based on the needs of the story
your image is to portray. Bigger is NOT always better, but a hard and fast
rule, if there is one should be broken regularly as needed.

Good Light!

It's all about viewing distance......

Hi,

I wonder if there is a practical assumption like portraits size max suitable
to 30*40 cm or landscapes around 50*70 cm. Of course any one can print any
sizes. I think printing large portraits might not be so good since it is or
might be bigger than the actual object.
