A couple of really good ideas here. The silicon adhesive
caulk is a good idea. So is the weatherstrip adhesive.

Careful - you may want to get the covering off again. Many
lenses have screws under the rubber focusing collar and to service
the lens you first remove the collar.

Also, if you put it on crooked you will want to get it off.
The probability of it going on crooked is directly proportional
to how hard it is to get off.

If the original glue is brown and stretchy/tacky it is Pliobond.
If it is clear and stretchy/tacky it is rubber cement. If it
is brown and crackly then it is shellac - shellac hasn't been used
since the 60's.

Removability is the key feature of the adhesive you should use.

It's like knots: any fool can tie a knot that won't come undone -
the key to a proper knot is that it comes undone easily when you
want it to but doesn't come undone under use.
