This is exactly what I do to clean acid corrosion off of battery terminals. It's the only way to stop the problem from reoccurring.

Maybe just a little water and baking soda on the end of a Q tip would do the trick and it should come out fairly easy compared to the gunk that was already there, if that didn't put the rest of the meter at risk. Now if the battery compartment is right near other sensitive electronics, Id definitely think twice.
