Microphone distorting

Hi all
This is a very strange one and I hope someone can help me here.
I have a boundary microphone connected through a phantom power supply to the
microphone input of the plextalk ptr2. When monitoring the recording
through the headphone socket, it sounds fine. I can also get the
microphone so that I get a "good" sound. The sound sounds crystal clear.
When I record the sound though it is so distorted that you can make out
absolutely nothing.
Does anyone have any idea what the trouble could be?
