Well, they don't 'know'. They expect you to be honest. Some apps 'call home' for updates or other types of support (Help content, etc.). Those may have built in regulators that identify the system they're installed upon, so if you try using it on two systems, they both may stop working because you're cheating the terms. I only know of a couple that do something like this, but figured you'd want to know that it does happen. Andyes, if your system dies and the licensing allows it, just install it on the replacement system. An app that uses Activation, like Windows, may still require a phone call to get the app reactivated.
