I bought an Acer for $450 a little over a year ago and I love it. It has
less memory than I would like and a fairly small hard drive (but big
enough). These items are easy to upgrade fairly cheaply in the future if
needed. I made sure it had a decent video performance by running Vista's
Performance Index. I noticed that the video scored below 3.0 were a little
choppy, especially when playing videos. I even saw a few where the Demo
program was choppy. After seeing my Acer, my Mother and Sister bought one
and their only complaint (and mine) was Vista.

I have heard people say that Toshiba makes some of the best laptops, but the
only ones I saw in my price range (dirt cheap) had pretty poor video
performance. If you can afford a Toshiba that has decent performance, then
I would get that.

What I like about Acer is that when making a low end laptop, they seem to
try not to cut corners in ways that would give you a bad experience, like
very poor performance in video. But, that is only my opinion and I don't
have a very large experience with laptops, so listen more to the more
experienced laptop users.
