Wow, you ladies are up early this morning.  Jo, it is o.k. to vent--good for 
the soul!  A couple of ideas:  You might download Web of Trust (WOT) that 
works for both IE and Firefox.  That will help you to know who to trust if 
you decide to do a "fix".  I did this once (applied a fix found by Google) 
and I first set a Restore Point before applying the fix.  The fix worked. 
Another idea is to try a different e-mail client.  Incredimail is reported 
to have improved a lot and is recommended by my stationery site 
(www.thundercloud.net ) It is free.  I have not tried it so can't speak from 
experience.  I still have Windows XP and Outlook Express.  Really dread 
having to go to Windows 7 but I know it will be necessary eventually.
Perhaps others will chime in who have actually used a specific fix and/or 
who use Incredimail.
