M, If the drive won't even open, the whole problem could just be with the drive's power cable. If there's a CD currently inside the drive, look closely at the front of the drive for a small pinhole. It's usually near the drive activity LED &/or Eject button. Get yourself a paper clip, straighten it out and insert one end into this hole until you feel resistance. If you push a little harder at this point, the tray will open just enough for you to grab it with your fingers and open it the rest of the way. This feature is built into these types of drives just in case of drive failure. Whether or not there was a CD in the tray, just try following the part of Trev's instructions for cleaning the contacts on the ribbon and power cables inside the case. If it really is just a power problem, that should be enough to get it working again. Make sure that you notice which side of the ribbon cable (the 40 or 80 wire, flat cable) has the red wire, both at the mainboard and at the drive, so that you can replace it exactly the same way. When you're done with the cables, don't put the case cover back on right away, just in case you need to do any more work inside. NOTE: If it still doesn't work after reseating the cables, try plugging in a different power connector (the larger, 4-pronged white connectors that only go in one way).
