Hi Ted, thanks for your response. I have looked in
I.E.>Tools>Internet
Options on all the tabs and I don't seem to be able to find out
where to do
this. Would you point me in the right direction, please?

TIA,

Sammi

Hi Cris, thanks for the prompt response. I am not on a router
yet. That will
be my next project, LOL.

I can go to any site I choose...until I have gone to 5 or 6 and
then it
starts giving me the "the page cannot be displayed". And it will
do this for
EVERY site until I reboot. And then the whole thing starts over
again. I
have to plan my bill paying etc carefully so I can get as much
done in those
5 or 6 chances.

Good morning, Cris and thank you so much for the link. My
connecting to the
Internet had reached the point where even after a reboot I could
not get in
any web site. So I was happy to see this. It sounds like this
might be the
trouble. I can still get most of my email thank goodness, just
not the
web-based email from Hotmail.

I read it last night and followed the instructions ...I think,
:)). But as
of last night it had not helped. Before I went to bed I restored
the
registry and put back the files it said I could delete since it
was not
better. Since the local cable modem problem and my install/then
uninstall of
Zone Alarm all happened in the same time frame it is hard for me
to
determine exactly what happened.

This morning I couldn't sleep thinking about my situation so I
got up 2
hours early (groannnn) and I will try again. Yah, I'm addicted!
But it is
critical for me too, as I pay my bills, do my banking etc on my
computer.

Thanks again,
Sammi

Hi to all,

Running W98, Dell Pentium II, 320 MB RAM, 13 G HD dr with 8 G
free, Internet
Explorer 6 and my antivirus is PC-cillin Internet Security.

I have recently switched from dial-up to cable modem and for a
couple of
weeks everything was fabulous. Then suddenly 3 days ago my area
had
problems, a friend of mine on the other side of town also
experienced
trouble. Neither of us could connect. She has XP and I have W98.

After a call to tech support that told us to Power Cycle our
external cable
modems and reboot, she was up and surfing with no apparent
problems. I was
also able to connect; however I still have problems that she
apparently does
not. The reason I say apparently is that she doesn't use her
computer as
much as I use mine.

Also during this time I suspected that the firewall that comes
with
PC-cillin might not be aggressive enough so I downloaded the
free version of
Zone Alarm. But something in Zone Alarm caused PC-cillin to
reboot every
time
I tried to update the pattern files. Uninstalled ZA and no more
trouble with
my AV.

My problem is that I can connect fine, get my email from my ISP
(but NOT
from hotmail). Then when I
try surfing I can go to about 5 or 6 sites and after that any
page I try to
get into gives me a "the page cannot be displayed". In order to
proceed I
must reboot. Doesn't seem to matter if I do a hard boot or just
restart
Windows. Then I can go to a few sites and the whole thing starts
over. Here
is what I have done on my own and what I have done while on the
phone with
tech support.

I did a scan disk & defrag about a week ago.

Completely recycled the power on the cable modem. Dumped the
temporary
internet files and cookies and dumped the Windows temp files.
Tried to ping
from DOS. This had strange results. Sometimes a site that I
could not get
into would reply
and return the packets from a ping just fine, while others gave
me a
"request timed out".

Then I decided to try my dial-up connection which will expire in
10 days and
see what would happen. To my surprise pretty much the same thing
occurred.
So
this leads me to believe that perhaps it isn't just my cable
modem or new
ISP. But instead that it must be something on my computer or
perhaps a
setting got changed in IE6.

Any help at all would be most appreciated and thanks in advance,

Sammi

Hi Glo, I will check this out when I find it and see what
happens. IF I can
get to the archives that is. Your remarks at the end of this
message sounds
like what my new ISP tech support had me do.

Thanks for your response!

Hi Sammi,
This sounds like a problem I had with my cable when I first got
connected--it was fine for 2 weeks, then suddenly I couldn't
access many
websites for two months and went through all kinds of HELL to
fix it, only
to find out that it WAS a problem with the provider. If you'd
like to read
about this to see the similarities in our problems, go to this
section of
the archives //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/
(listed below)
and go to July 2003 and way down the list , almost to the
bottom, you'll see
my posts re Can't Access Websites and all the responses. The
one from Grant
Karpik gave the best lead, as it DID turn out to be the provider
and I
posted this in September:
Hi Folks--well, you probably all remember the GREAT BIG problem
I was having
with cable, not being able to access most websites. For 2
months I've been
following the advice of Grant Karpik (7/30) and hollering long
and loud;
...well, I got a call this a.m. from the IS department at
Cablevision in St.
Joseph, MO and
it had to do with the IP address. In a matter of minutes, it's
all fixed.
Due to the fact that I suggested this solution to them app. 6
weeks ago (on
the advice of this list ), I will now start working on my 2 free
months I
feel they owe me....Wow, I am a happy camper! Thanks for all
the offers for
solutions (saved in a folder) and for bearing with me through
all this--Glo

Well Sammi, this was a huge problem that turned out to be very
simple, but
can't be solved without the input of the provider. When they
called me I
think he had me go to Run, then type in something that made the
IP address
show. When I told him what it said, he said hang on a sec, then
he said
"ok, you're all set now" and I was. I only wish they had found
the time to
do it 2 months sooner and saved me all the stress and anguish of
trying to
find the problem! If you can't find the posts in th archives I
will copy
and send them to you private if you like. HTH--Glo

Sammi, re the post I just sent (signed Glo), I had just done the
same thing
you did with ZA and thought that might be my problem--it wasn't.
Hope you
get this figured out, but if all else fails go back to your
cable company
and insist they check your IP address. This is not something
the regular
techs can do, it has to be done by someone in the IS Dept.---Glo
