A new drive letter will show up when you plug the drive in -- once the
drive has been formatted.

Right-click the My Computer icon, and select Manage. Double-click Disk
Management. Find the drive, right-click, and one of the options should
be to format. Be very sure that you're formatting the correct drive,
else you may find yourself with lots of data gone. If nothing in the
list is definitely the correct drive, I'd suggest contacting the
Maxtor help desk.
