The 201 and 203 also uses HD-BURN. Didn't hear about the same for DVD. 
Look closely, I bet you see that the DVD will only play in the 401 drive
and not you home DVD player

Internal is the way to go for me. Unless the tech has changed an 
external will be slower. If you have the slot for it I would leave the 
OEM cd-drive in.
Why wear out your DVD-drive by  playing cds. Also the DVD-drive will run 
better if you set it up as the Master.
