I guess I should have clarified -- I was looking for a non-RedHat (and
preferrably non-RPM-based) Linux...

So it does (works just fine) on CentOS 3.5, providing
/etc/redhat-release
is temporarily (just for the install) replaced with "politically
correct"
content.
