Also, some, if not many of us are seeking out pre-owned Optacons so we will
have them when our original personal units have broken past the point of
repair. Richard Oehm has been able to restore and re-construct missing
parts, and others are doing the same; but it makes sense to have at least
one spare, especially if we find them either dirt cheap on EBay or receive
them as gifts from friends who are no longer using them. This was the case
with one I received. All my friend would take for it was a box of
California assorted nuts. The unit had been unused in a closet for over 20
years and only needed a battery replacement and checkup from Mr. Oehm.

As for soft packs, Mr. Oehm sometimes has these available. The Optacon I
purchased had absolutely no recognizable foam left in the case thanks to
East Coast humidity. Mr. Oehm honestly told me the pack wasn't in the best
of shape on the outside, but the necessary padding was fully intact, and the
little bit of tape on the outside isn't of any great concern to me. I
probably could have gone without a pack, but I figured it would be best for
storage. By the way, there was a discussion long ago on this list about the
potential disintegration of these cases in the right, or should I say, wrong
conditions. <smile> My original Optacon came with me to California years
ago to a much drier climate and I was shocked to learn firsthand about the
stick residue inside a case which had remained untouched for years. When I
sent this unit to Mr. Oehm for repair I sent it in the soft pack, but wiped
off the filmy residue and enclosed it in a plastic shopping bag as a liner
before replacing it inside the case. -----

I think that is in part, because many of us have one at work, and one at
home, and feel they're too valuable to chance transport damage on. However,
I
transported mine on the road 1978-89, and had no transport related
damage--but I did carry it in it's leather case inside the soft pack. My
soft packs,
Margie's and Mine are in deplorable shape because of the foam. I surely
wish I had a replacement of proper size and durability!

Without actually meaning to start this thread, the replies it received on

possession of 19 people. It doesn't take much math to see that the average
number of Optacons per person is just over two. I'm placing these replies
in a file called howmany. Maybe it is worthwhile from the development and
preservation point of view to find out how many machines are being used.
Amazing!
