Nick,

The outer dimensions of the soft pack are, roughly, 13-1/2 inches by 9
inches by 4 inches. The front pouch is about 7 inches wide by 10 tall, by
1-1/2 deep. The R1D, in the case, is roughly 10 by 6-1/2 by 2-1/2.

Hope this helps.

Cindy

I'm less than useless in measuring, and don't know whether I've my braille
Optacon manuals, or where the print ones might be after all this time... Do
you
have any idea whatsoever of the dimensions we're talking about to carry
Optacon, reading mat (mine are becoming brittle) and, charger--and if at all
possible
lenses?

Nick,

If you still are looking for a suitable carrying case for the
Optacon, you might want to check out

www.executiveproductsinc.com

to see what they have. They make cases for note takers and many
other things as well. I think some are general purpose and they
also do make custom-designed cases for many specific models of
notakers and such. They are a bit pricey, but maybe you could find
something in their product line which would work, preferably without
modification.

I think that is in part, because many of us have one at work, and
one at home, and feel they're too valuable to chance transport
damage on. However, I
transported mine on the road 1978-89, and had no transport related
damage--but I did carry it in it's leather case inside the soft
pack. My soft packs,
Margie's and Mine are in deplorable shape because of the foam. I
surely wish I had a replacement of proper size and durability!

Amazing!
