For all the silly talk about how difficult ATSC is, my wife and I agree that getting radio and TV over the Internet is far more temperamental.

And by the way, unlike digital radio or TV, the problems with online streaming are not as easily fixed on a permanent basis. Why? Because the sources are forever messing around with their feeds, changing their servers, changing their players, changing their compression algorithms. And if that isn't bad enough, virus software and firewalls at the ISPs also conspire to screw things up, on an ongoing basis. You think you've fixed the problem today? Wait for tomorrow.

Funny how some people view a huge benefit as a problem.

The ability to continuously evolve the underlying technology is what has allowed us to migrate from downloading JPEG stills, to short, very poor quality video clips, to reliable high quality streaming in the same time frame that the ATSC standard was developed and deployed.

If I have a good WiFi link I can stream ALL KINDS of TV content in real time today with NO quality problems. The problem comes when I want to use the AT&T 2G/3G network to do the same. The big pipes are ready, now it is mostly a question of getting enough spectrum to make 4G work for everybody.

Craig
