The new twist described in this piece is work on enabling ALL of the
6 MHz channel to be used for ATSC M/H. Well, that would sure kill
off any thought of OTA HDTV.
This looks like a tactic for broadcasters to hold onto their OTA
spectrum, showing that they too can reinvent themselves to fit into
the trendy new mobile hand-held market, even 100 percent. Seems like
one heck of a challenge to MediaFLO, potentially.
(Oh, except there's no monthly fee. People won't like that. Must add
the monthly fee to be taken seriously.)
This sounds more like the ATSC trying to position themselves to be in
the battle to be picked for the next standard, IF the broadcasters
are required to go though another transition to free up more spectrum.
I doubt the ATSC can control the next process as they did the last.
It will be far to easy to demonstrate that they DID NOT take the
input of all affected users into account when creating the ATSC
standard, and the K-street Lawyers that controlled the last process
don't have the clout they did a decade or two ago.
But the biggest problem for the ATSC is that any attempt to push a
standard that only uses the new MHP standard makes all those mandated
ATSC receivers that have been deployed, useless boat anchors.
Me thinks they have painted themselves into a corner...
