Bill

I'm not being sarcastic but you are really flogging a dead horse here. The
download system will recognise that you have Office installed on your PC,
but in order for the download to install properly it may ask for your
original disks. I've had it happen with some of my downloads, I choose to
go hunt for them or leave it till later, depending on what I'm doing at the
time.

I guess somewhere deep in the EULA there will be a clause that states you
will occasionally be asked to install original disks when performing
updates, but we all scroll to the bottom of EULAs without reading them.

You can choose NOT to install the update, and you can also choose not to be
reminded about that particular update again. I suggest you go with the
System Restore which has already been proposed. Then you should also go for
Custom settings for further updates which at least will enable you to switch
off the update that's giving you these problems.

I have the same problem with one of my 2 installations, which is on an older
version of Office. Heaven only knows where the disks are, 3 house moves
later. And it's not such an issue because I don't really use it now that
I've got my new laptop. I just live with it, and make sure I have disable
the auto install for this update so that it stops being a thorn in my flesh.

The basic comment that has been made by others still stands, if you
genuinely paid for the disk and have lost it, contact Microsoft for a
replacement. We all lose things, claim on our insurance or pay out to
replace ourselves. I'm no fan of Microsoft but they aren't to blame if you
can't locate the disks.

And I'm really NOT being sarcastic.

What you say is not untrue. My question is, "Why will the update, SP3, be

allowed to download but not install?" No one has addressed that question.
On the premise that the original disk is unavailable or illegal, then I feel

that the blockage of the update should occur prior to the download, not
after the download and prior to the install. I would have to live without
the update and that would be my problem. To block my usage of one of the
Office Programs is not my idea of fairness. The next question is why did it

not affect Word or Access, but only Excel.
As you say, I will have to live with the situation, but (and a big BUT) it

seems that MS is doing only half their job when they allow the download but
not the install. I am not asking anyone to perform an illegal action; only
to give me some reasonable idea of why the action of the update is only a
halfway process.
