Well, I received many answers and if they were not sarcastic then they were 
only asking "where are the originals".   I wish I could answer that.  I only 
know that the update downloaded but would not install.
  That is my big question, why half the job and not the whole job.  If it 
going to "download" then why won't it "install".  And if is going to 
download but not install why should it affect the program?  I only want the 
update to either install or be able to be removed; nothing more.
  My complaint with MS is that because I do not have the original disk(s) 
they deny me the use of a working program.  Even more puzzling is the fact 
that other parts of Office were not affected,  Word and Access continue to 
work OK.
  So your question about "installing the service pack" doesn't track since 
the service pack only downloaded and would not install.  The message says 
that in order to install the service pack I need the original disk(s).  I 
now get the same message when I try to load Excel.
