You assume they're doing half the job, but for them it might be the smart  
thing to do. Say you buy a machine with an illegal copy of Office. You or them  
might never know, but by letting you download the update and not install it,  
they're accomplishing two tasks. One they're letting you know you have an  
illegal copy and two, if you really like or use Office, this might convince you 
 
to buy a legal copy. Either way Bill, I think you should be calling MS about  
your copy's legality. This list is really to help you USE it legally, not to  
bypass whatever roadblocks MS puts up to cut down on pirate  software.
