The test consisted of machining a piece of bar to produce several diameters and lengths all to fairly tight tolerances. I beavered away until the job was complete but one of the diameters was a few tenths of a thou undersize. Undaunted I then spent a couple of hours with various grades of emery cloth, wet and dry and oil producing a magnificent finish to the test piece. The next step was to present the test piece to the inspector, a wizened old guy who sat behind a raised desk all day at one end of the apprentice training school. I breezed up to him and proudly presented my work. He took it off me and tossed it into the waste bin with one movement. "What did you do that for?" I cried. "Undersize" he said, "Start again". I never tried to pull a fast one on an inspector ever again. Barrie MODEL ENGINEERING DISCUSSION LIST.
