If you get lots of clinker you are using the wrong coal. Good Welsh Steam
Coal produces very little.

There is no way, looking into a 5" gauge firebox, that you can see clinker.
You notice it by the fire simply failing to function properly. A metal coat
hanger with a bent bit at the end and a loop at the other works wonders for
raking the fire as you stop in the station to take on water, use the
injector and build up the fire.

In my experience a heavy fire, too much coal and not enough real heat, tends
to produce clinker much faster than a thin fire just covering the grate but
hot as hell.

If you get too much clinker the only real option is drop the firebox, clean
it off and start again.

We had a batch of poor coal at IDSME last year and boy was it noticeable.
We decided it was best used on the fire in the Booking Office, which
incidentally is now fully functional and fitted out, unlike the last time
you saw it. Methinks you need to visit again in the spring with your loco
on tow.

Thanks to all for responding to my smokebox innards question. You may
suppose that I will have a request for further and better particulars soon
but now for another wally question.

I've been pondering, I really should get out more, on clinker. I run my
locos. They steam well to start with. I poke the fire about a bit. I throw
out the really manky bits of coal before firing them. The pressure is more
and more reluctant to come up. I drop the fire and find loads of clinker.

Two questions. First when I look at the the fire or rake it how do I spot
the clinker? Second question what do I do save for pull it out, if I can
recognise it amongst the other white hot bits when I find some?
