David,

This is a good way to handel this.

Let me take a shot at the steps for a laptop
1 be sure that you have interacted with the message table, control- option-shift-down arrow 

2 control-option-semicolen so that you won't need to use the VO keys.
3 FN key-shift-right arrow to go to the bottom of the list and FN key- shift- left arrow to go to the top 
4 semicolen to take the lock off.
I tried this several times and it works great for me. As a matter of fact, I will use this.

But have you tried these combinations with only one hand!!  Just using
home and end keys, as in Jaws would be a great asset!!
