Hello, Andrew,

I would sort out one thing at a time. II was on an open university course
at the time and so first I tackled the internet and the open university
website. Then I moved to PDF documents and as I had kurtzwield for the mac
this was not too difficult to do.

Then I tried the calendar and I would need to refresh a bit with the
calendar etc. But I have both phone and mac pro in linked so whatever I
place on the phone it goes automatically into the mac.

It would have taken me so long to work this out but someone in the store set
it up for me. I am a shortcut techy and it is amazing if you can understand
the workings of the computer, but simply all I want to do is just send
e-mails wordprocess and keep a diary and maybe read a book or pdf document.

So I am not really interested in the finer workings of the computer just in
the end results.

But the apple people are there to help you get there. It was the best £79
which I ever spent for training.

If you have a particular area of interest you can just ask them and they
will train you with whatever application you require. I generally make
another date for training when I am in the store. It just keeps everything
moving.

Best wishes,

Hazel Flannigan.

Thanks for that Hazel I’ll give them a ring andarrange some sessions with
them. Like you though, I live an hours journey from Liverpool or Manchester
and work full time so might be a bit difficult. Did you have an itinerary
with them or was it just turn up and go for it?

Hello, Andy,

I found it very useful as the trainers could tailor it to your needs.
Sometimes it is good to have someone beside you to identify the function
keys etc.

The people in the store have plenty of time and patience and if they see
there is a demand for VO training then they will provide it. I have worked
with a number of trainers and you can ask for one in particular especially
if they are blind friendly.

Like you the Mac was a big step and you need to keep at it to improve.

My only difficulty is that the Belfast store is an hour away from my home
and I need to learn the route with my guide dog. I am nearly there but, my
Mum has just died and so things are on hold at the moment.

But I do intend returning to the store in the future .

Apple staff will stand over their product and are very willing to help.

Best wishes and I hope it all works out for you soon.

Hazel Flannigan

Hi Hazel, thanks for that and I’ll look into it further. Have you availed
yourself of this service and how beneficial did you find it?

Hello, Andy,

I live in Northern Ireland and you can join a one to one service at your
local Apple Mac Store.

They charge £79 for a one year subscription and they will trouble shoot and
help navigate the beast.

You can bring any apple device and they will help with Voice over too. They
The group in Belfast really try hard.

I am sure it will be the same in England too.

Best wishes,

Hazel Flannigan

Armagh.

Hi Scott, thanks for that I will look into this further. Do you know of any
training packs for Mac? I know freedom scientific do a set of cds for Jaws
users, is there a similar thing available with Apple?

Well, Loo who I think is on this list is in the UK and offers Mac services,
maybe you could pay him to train you and your training would already be
blindness specific from a skilled technician.

Pending that, the Apple store has one on one sessions. I have heard from
blind users in the states these can be very good and the staff is usually
familiar with VO. I think these classes are about $100 US. (I think that’s
about 60 Pounds)

Finally, the Moderator is a certified Apple technician / trainer. Maybe you
could work a deal there.
