Not sure if my question got threw yesterday but I was asking if I have an
external hard drive that has music on it and was formatted by windows if I
plug it in to my mac will the mac whipe it out

     You'll probably have to type shift-command-k to view your network in
Finder.  It might also show up in your side bar.  However, I always look at
my network in finder.  Theremight be another way, but that's always worked
for me.
