What if the external hard drive is connected to my windows machine and I want to see it on my mac can I do that -----Original Message----- From: mac4theblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mac4theblind-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of John Panarese Sent: Sunday, August 21, 2011 4:44 PM To: mac4theblind@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mac4theblind] Re: question about sharing external hard drives You need to have file sharing turned on in System Preferences by going into System Preferences and VO spacing on the Sharing button to open the pane. In that same pane you'll find a list of services that can be checked or unchecked. When you have file sharing checked, you will need to add a share folder. There is add buttons for both folders and users, but keep in mind, for some reason, you actually need to VO space on the add User button. Once you do this, a standard dialog will open. Find your external volume and add it. Once you do this, as long as the drive is connected to that Mac, it will be seen on the network. Note that you'll want to add the volume name itself, unless you only want specific folders on that drive shared. In that case, you'll have to select the folders themselves. You can, btw, do this on the Mac itself by adding specific folders on the Mac's hard drive as share points. In other words, if you only want your downloads folder or your Music folder shared, you'd add them as shared folders. A list of all shared folders is shown once you start adding them.
