In the movie, the mole is recruited at Oxford in the late '30s, if I remember correctly. Philby and co. were, also if I remember correctly, recruited at Oxford about the same time. Apparently there was quite a strong wave of socialism that swept through the student body. The University of Toronto is a thoroughly establishment school and I find it ironic that there are almost weekly marches protesting globalization, or capitalism, or the U.S., and of course sometimes all three at the same time.
