Thanks yes I was right then the plug in I bought for my Ocr is good, re Toshiba I asked a nice man who now works for NBCS VIPs children what he used, this was about three years ago, he had a Toshiba for 4 years and no problems, I did have a problem and the shop where a friend got it were not interested, so after calls that seemed to route around the World and getting fed up I finally got in the Uk a nice man called James Watt, now he was very kind and sent me a Patch, also he said they have a special relationship with a Company making Screen Readers they are based in Worcester. 1 of the 3 main Screen Readers, well even if it is not Jaws it is nice to know isn't it that VIPs come up high in their care management I have James Watts Email address , so does Andrew Hodgson who also had the same Sound problem and he was sent a Patch also. by the way in March Which Consumers report they feature in their Legal bit how a man taking a Graphics Degree had a big problem with Rock International, he needed a specially good laptop costing over £2,400 and they sorted it out for him I had not heard of Rock International myself Dorothy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tristram Llewellyn" <tristram.llewellyn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Lenovo is spun off from IBM whose laptops have generally always been
considered good if somewhat expensive. I would see no reason not to
have one of those models on your shortlist although they are quite
different machines. IBM/Lenovo and Toshiba sit at the top of my
personal pile to look at. I've had two Toshiba Tecras and both were
very stable if not exactly up to the minute for their time being
business workhorse time machines but were otherwise ecellent machines.
Dell are worth a look and have gone up a point or two on my scale
because for some ranges they will do an absolutely vanilla machine
without bloadware.

Last year I brought a Sony VAIO, although in itself not a bad machine,
its performance is only average really and Sony put tons cr*ppy
bloatware on them including Norton trial. I got so fed up with it that
I brought an OEM VISTA Ultmiate and after a bit of a tussle getting
various drivers to work, including a genuine Sony battery that is no
longer recognised as such prsently, I have a clean VISTA SP1 system. I
wouldn't recommend the Sony's on this particular basis I have had
machines that are easier to rebuild from scratch than my present Sony.

Advent is a Dixons own brnad, I would try for something with a bigger
name and in the mid market considering prices are really quite cheap
these days. Try Dell or Toshiba for instance. Dell are not widely sold
except rhrough their online presence however you may get a recomendation
from someone who has got one recently.

Just wondering, has anyone on here ever used an Advent computer? They
are a range I know little about, so just wanted some user feedback
before taking the plunge on a good looking one I've seen.

Perhaps any messages off-list would be the best idea?

Thanks
