dont know what you think is exorbitant. unmanaged switches are typically 100 to
150 bucks per port while managed ones run about 1000 to 1500 bucks per port. it
is not just for the management capability that you pay - look at other specs
like max mac address table size etc. like srs has pointed out, cheap managed
switches and most unmanaged switches do funny and bad things under heavy load.
