we have 120 machines on our lan. From the internet, we have an 8-port
switch. 3 lines from this go to the servers (dhcp,mail, file,
firewall etc), 4 lines are free and *one* line goes to a 24 port
switch to which some machines are connected directly and the rest
through 5 hubs. We were advised that we should have the 5 lines from
the main 8-port switch go to 5 managed switches to which all the
machines can be connected without using hubs.
the problems we are facing with the current setup:
1. slow speed for the machines downstream
2. some machines need static IPs for various reasons. We find that
students in the labs put these static IPs on their machines creating
problems.
