Poor quality hubs or cabling could also be a major bottleneck for even
moderately heavy traffic (IM etc). If you let wannabe skript kiddies on
your college lan try packeting each other, run p2p etc then there's more
problem. Of course theres viruses and spyware (though a customized xp
config and permissions should help there)

on Linux else have a good antivirus) then a network with 10 / 100 mbps
enet
card and a simmilar ordinary switch stack should not be the bottle neck for
a 120 system network .
if you still have speed issues , i suggest that upgrade the net back bone
connection which probably is the bottle neck.
If the problem still persists , them you may look at upgrading the
switches.
