try out this
The grub,conf file has to be like this..
title title name
root (hd0,1) #this should be the boot partition ,for the root
for the grub is the /boot
kernel /bzImage ro root=/dev/hdax # here u have to specify the
/ (root) of ur installation

Tell us step-by-step as to what you did in the kernel
compilation process.
It is not appropriate to make assumptions and give you
commands without knowing how exactly you compiled.
