Rusty Russel is available at http://www.netfilter.org for which he is the
maintainer. Shorewall is available at http://www.shorewall.net with Tom
Eastap as the maintainer. Echowall, Seattlewall, narc, horatio are the
others you can look at. Base RH Linux has a tool called lokkit which uses
ipchains - the earlier firewalling utility. From what I've seen, Shorewall
is the best script generator. The best by-hand scripting I've seen is by
James C. Stephens at www.cs.princeton.edu/~jns/security/iptables/.
In case further help is needed, I'd be glad to help.

Hi Gayathri
Commendable. Its nice to see somebody working on a real project for once
!!!
Now, can you elaborate on what features are to be implemented in your mini
project ?
Here is what I make from your mail..
iam the new user.i am doing my mini project which shud implement the
firewall
in Linux. Can anyone help me in this regard.it shud be implemented
in any application. This is the first project iam doing.so pls help me.
1. Firewall Implementation for a college ? - so this is a configuration
project
2. Firewall Implementation as in Developing a new firewall ? -- this is
definitely not a 'mini' -project.
So, I think you must be looking at Option 1 above...
On latest versions of Linux distributions, the firewall used is based on a
command called 'iptables'. It is described very well in documentation from
a guy called Russ Nelson - under the heading Netfilter. You can use any of
the key words iptables, netfilter to search google for more information.
Some Firewall Configuration software is also available which makes
configuration easy. For example: look at a project called Shorewall. Again,
google is your friend. Sorry, my internet connection is too slow now to
search and provide you exact URLs.
BTW: before you implement Firewalls, you need to have some basic
understanding of TCP/IP Networking. A good place to start is the 'TCP/IP
Tutorial RFC' which is again available ..... u guessed it... search on
google !!!
And if you need more documentation - there is the Firewall HOWTO for
Linux.. use google to search :)
Hope that info was useful...Do let me know the progress of your project.
