The BSDL has a different background.
People who were (and who still are)working on BSDL Code were mostly from
the academia(MIT,UCB) and since these bodies are public "owned", it was
decided that whatever "product" comes out of these institutions should
also remain in the public domain.
The BSDL is not an alternative to the GPL.
FLOSS needs the GPL and there can be no compromise made on that.
Take Mac OS X for example, its built off the FreeBSD core.
Can you compare a Mac with FreeBSD as a desktop platform ?
Now under the same scenario, imagine Linux under the BSDL and see how
many Mac OS clones will come out from of RH,Novell,IBM.
What ESR thinks is not important,IMNSHO.
