There are many more things that you could do to optimize your system
performance depending on your free time and patience. I'm still
productive enough on a Pentium 60 with 16 MB RAM running Linux (with a lean
and mean GUI of course) ;-).
Thanks for the tips, but I'm curious: Which desktop distro of Linux can
run reasonably fast with X and say, a browser, in 16 MB on a P60?
I have a nice Toshiba Libretto (P75 w/16 MB) that has been running
Slackware for a long time in 16 MB, but I'd like to upgrade to an RPM-
based distro, with Wifi support, and a halfway decent browser, that will
be reasonably quick (without paging). Extra memory for the Libretto is
more expensive than the residual value of the machine, so that's out of
the equation.
RedHat 5.2 comes to mind, it's lightning-quick in 32 MB and has Netscape
4.07, but it requires jumping through some hoops to get WiFi going, and its
usability at w/16 MB is doubtful.
