everythig except nothing is fast(consufed eh!)
This brings us back to the basic question - "How fast is fast after all ?"
The answer to which generally varies from one person to the other.
A simple test on my machine proved that KDE setup (default on Mandrake) was
pertty slow. I started noatun to play music, and then I opened up the
Konsole (which took atleast 5 seconds to start), and clicked on "Create new
tab" button for about 40 times (to open 40 new Konsole session within a tab)
till noatun almost stopped and my hard disk began to churn. My desktop is
almost unusable now.
I tried the same exercise using Openbox window manager (with ROX Session
running) by running mp3blaster within rxvt to play music, and clicking on
the terminal icon (rxvt, apparently). I gave up after opening about
130+ sessions of rxvt (I should've automated the task with a script
perhaps), and my desktop still felt stable and responsive enough (without a
glitch in music). I'm sure it could run more apps without churning my hard
disk.
Of course, you would argue that my optimal setup (Openbox+ROX+rxvt) is
neither "user friendly", convenient nor "windows like" for an average user.
But it has been more convenient and productive for me ;-)
