A good balance over "user-friendly" and "resource-friendly" can be
found in the XFce4 desktop - http://xfce.org. ;
I used to like XFce desktop back in the 3.x versions (which resembled more
closely to *cough* the beautiful CDE on Solaris). But the 4.x version though
looks more pretty (anti-aliased fonts, gtk2 bindings, more bells and
whistles), was a bit more resource intensive and at times buggy (xfpanel
fails to load once in a while). Of course, it is lighter than KDE/Gnome, but
I still consider it to be somewhat heavy-weight. It needs upto 32 MB of
memory to be usable.
But I will switch to rox one day if official debian packages become avaiable.
Its well worth the effort ;-). ROX-Filer in my opinion is more "user
friendly" and powerful than xffm/xftree4 (the file manager bundled with
XFce). When configured well with ROX-Session, you can get the basic features
of a _modern_ powerful desktop environment like background wallpaper, a
powerful file-manager, desktop icon support (which is a very useful feature
for those who have been using KDE/Gnome/Windows desktop), desktop panel,
basic configuration tool and session management. All these features with a
memory utilization of about 12 MB. Works like a charm on my old thinkpad
with 32 MB RAM :-)
