Basically, i have the habit of categorizing Users/People into different
categories,like,
1) Normal Desktop Users (No Internet, just entertainment, this can also
include Media Center)
2) Normal Desktop Users with Internet Support (which may/not include
Video/Audio Conferencing)
3) Developers/Programmers (non MS developers, like Java/Python y
4) Gamers (may/not include 2nd type)
5) Combination of 1 + 2+ 3 + 4
Don't do that.
Actually I would say all users are of type 5. A user based in category
1 might not be a developer, but he would like it if his OS was
developer-friendly. Telling him that his OS is just for normal-desktop
use and is not supposed to be a development based desktop will only
turn him off. He might never become a developer but he will be happy
knowing that his OS can also be a developer OS.
My point is, all these custom distro's are good for solving one
problem and one problem only. These sort of problems are usually that
of the GEEKy-type (Ex: I need Media Center s/w on my PIII, I use a
MythTV-Knoppix based distro), not the casual user.
Unless there is major development upstream to address the common
user's issues I dont think we can do much but help out with what we
have now.
just my 0.02$
