Computer software has diverse use. In a shop, in a home, in school,
in a office, in research and so on. The needs vary.
Yes linux has problems. But be honest, and tell me can't we use
present day distributions in atleast 80-90 percent of places where
computers are used? e.g
a. A office dealing with trivial typing and spread sheet.
b. In schools to teach children
c. In shops and other places of commerce.
d. In government offices
usage as on date.
Is not linux fit in all these places?.
If yes how many of these places use linux?
I am sure every body will agree that the usage is nearly 0 %.
What is wrong in creating awarness of FOSS atleast in these areas?
Why don't we look at the possible places where FOSS can already
satisfy the need.
Few months back I studied an NGO, who are working on Rural Health.
They don't need webcam, digital camera,TV tuner card, skype and ....
They just want to type, keep accounts and take printout.
Don't you think FOSS is fit for them?
Basically, OP, looks the world through his experience and feels linux
is not fit. Similarly I see from my experience, that Linux as of
today is fit for NOT LESS than 90% of the places where computer is
used for something.
There are some basic doubts raised about the awarness campaign,
whether it will serve any purpose etc.
My feeling, is let us do something, than simply fear about failures.
Think positively, act with confidence. True there is good chance of
failure, but what is the loss. After all the participant may loose
a.Few hours/days in participation.
But it is voluntary. Nobody is forced to participate. Only willing
people donate time. This should be considered a donation with
asking for return.
b.May be some physical discomfort
Only people who think they can endure and are willing to
participate.
