I never assumed, if you see some of the LUG posts, you would find it.And i
was mainly concerned about FOSS and OSS and not about money.If you had
interpreted in a wrong manner, sorry about that.

Did you know there are companies who customize
distros, packages for client requirements and charge a
service fee for maintenance over a period of time?

Example: Red Hat


First take concern of the nearby people's need and then give examples
whether they(RedHat or any other company) are been supporting or not their
needs.When i say people, its not Companies/Organiztions.

Well , i think SuSe is doing a good job than RedHat in terms of Desktop.

There are many
issues with Linux distros like Webcam support,audio
and video conferencing.

Aren't you an embedded software engineer at Novatium?
You should know this - Never blame the software if
there is no support from the hardware folks.


Excuse me,irrelevant of where i work, i do know there are hardware devices
which linux already supports...and many distros make it work like
suse,linspire etc.,You have to agree there are issues with Linux distros, do
u think every people are satisfied like you do?...how many people you want,
come with me once to customer places and they will tell you what they want
and then answer back them in the same manner.....

I've told this many times. If vendors don't release
their hardware data sheets, you cannot _write_ device
drivers for it ... (1)

If you don't understand the language, you cannot
communicate with the people who are using it.


This clearly shows that you are not exposed to the Customer Market,mainly
Home Users.Programming,developing,improving can make a developer or engineer
happy, but not the end users.

I think all these points should be considered during
awareness
programs/campaigns.

The main obstacle of people not
using Linux in their
desktops, as i see, is the lack of Yahoo/MSN webcam
support.

You have only been talking about webcam and you are
blaming Linux for it? See (1).

Video Chat every week with their son/daughter
abroad.How are we going to
tackle issues like these?.

Basically, i have the habit of categorizing
Users/People into different
categories,like,
1) Normal Desktop Users (No Internet, just
entertainment, this can also
include Media Center)
2) Normal Desktop Users with Internet Support (which
may/not include
Video/Audio Conferencing)
3) Developers/Programmers (non MS developers, like
Java/Python etc.,)
4) Gamers (may/not include 2nd type)
5) Combination of 1 + 2+ 3 + 4

You only said customers change their requirements
often - which is true. So, you can never say there are
only people of type I, II or III. Everyone is of type
V.

What i feel is, we have few areas to cover up.For
example, we have to expose
people to Skype and what one can do with Skype, then

An awareness programme should not be conducted just for the case that it has
to be...we have to see how far this could improve.I never told that the
awareness walk which is going to be conducted should be stopped/cancelled.I
just gave my points IN THIS THREAD that we should address few issues.

I would appreciate if you can first participate in few
LDDs/workshops before making any recommendations.


I think i am with the Linux Community already and i dont think participation
is the only way to prove that am eligible to recommend things.It is the
readers wish to take it or not.And i dont think i need to advertise what i
am doing.

Shakthi, i do appreciate if you could reply with some respect or better,
dont reply, which best suits for you. We are just discussing here and
already few people have agreed and discussed their concerns too in a
respectable tone.I would not have replied to your comment, but since you had
asked me directly whether am a s/w engg or not, i replied.One cannot tell
Linux is free of issues, and i do know where and how my contribution is
done.Just that you are organising LDDs/awareness programmes does not make
you to reply like this.

Members, i do appreciate if this issue is being taken.I have been
uncomfortable even before with Shakthi's way of handling
replies.Everybodyshould be given respect and taken
back.I hope members do understand this.
