Actually I would say all users are of type 5. A user based in category
1 might not be a developer, but he would like it if his OS was
developer-friendly. Telling him that his OS is just for normal-desktop
use and is not supposed to be a development based desktop will only
turn him off. He might never become a developer but he will be happy
knowing that his OS can also be a developer OS.
No.. I won't be happy. One of the reasons why I am happier with my
Debian than Windows is that it is able to provide for my system what I
as R.Ramkumar needs, not everything that I as a Mr. Generic User will
probably need. The rest is derogatorily looked down upon the former as
bloat :)
That apart, I think this is an issue which strikes at the heart of
what is the philosophy of the FOSS world, versus other proprietary
vendors. Due to the immense flexibility and freedom, it is but natural
for alternatives to be more specific and focussed. That's why we have
distros customized right for from routers to laptops, from the lay
user to the sophisticated geek.
So, how to make the common man happy? Without troubling him too much,
ask him a single question about what his needs are, and pull out
something out of the hat just perfect for him. When done just to the
right extent, I believe he/she would be happy with the the richness of
the FOSS world.
