In my discussions with Raman and Bharathi, we had found merit in one day
training of the students and enabling them to conduct the LDD later
(basically the Arunai experience).

I would suggest that you please add
something for students who are not from core computer branches, esp.
Mechanical and ECE. At least one stall could contain demo / exposition on
QCad, Calculix, Scilab, etc. Senthil Anand and Sujith from our group have
done some work on it.
Ya, I wanted to stress this. Other than CSE and IT, branches like EEE,
ECE and ICE can also make use of open source tools. Embedded and VLSI
technology very much uses *nix in them. So, as a EEE by grad, I support
one or two stalls for Electical/Electronics based and Mechanical based
foss tools. The former may deal with Embedded and VLSI and Tools for
Electrical simulations similar to elec-autocad (Am not aware of any, but
if I get an opportunity, I wish to develop one in future, will ponder
more into it ;) ). The latter may have QCAD and SciLab, perhaps taken
care by Sujith and Senthil.
Some of you could come over here on a mutually
convenient day and we can fix up a set. Or else, Parthan (who is already in
with us) can take the lead in this guided by Kenneth.

We can work out a basic structure training and LDD / workshop / half-a-day
seminar. I would suggest that we focus more on the potential use of FOSS
and
the various application areas, the opportunity for collaborative
development
(and, forgive me, less on the history and philosophy). We could think of a
joint msg to the colleges that ILUG-C and NRCFOSS / AU-KBC are joining to
HELP THE COLLEGES TO ORGANIZE the LDD / seminar. If feasible, I can discuss
with Prof Krishanan (our Director) to transmit the msg thru our Teachers
Mailing group and also put in NRCFOSS portal.
1. LDD will have to be developed further into routine lecture sessions,
a FOSS lab hour - like the library hour and PT hour we used to have in
schools, maybe CSE and IT departments may be encouraged to conduct "code
a program" contests.
2. After a group of volunteers have been trained by the LDD, this group
should be able to lead the process further in their respective
institutions. They should train more poeple, so that we don't have the
necessity to keep training ppl from the same college for LDDs, rather
concentrate on other colleges.
3. As with arunai college, who have said that they will participate in
the proposed "Guindy March', the colleges we visit should also
contribute the community efforts, leaded by ILUGC / NRCFOSS or any
local/national Linux comminities.
I could then implore the colleges to (a) conduct at least one LDD / lecture
related to FOSS during July-Aug-Sep ; (b) the colleges which have LUG shoud
organize a lecture for the benefit of nearby schools on the Software
Freedom
Day ; (c) all the colleges should have a local LUG -- inaugurated on the
LDD/Seminar or on SF Day.
If not a LUG, atleast a Club of Linux Users. It may have volunteers who
contact LUGC for help and support. this club will take efforts to spread
FOSS in their own locality, ILUGC will just provide the Umbrella! :)
Raman and I had discussed about zone-wise LUGs with apex members
interacting
with ILUG-C. This is not to restrict membership, but to co-ordinate and
organize local events more effectively.
Looking for more active '2-Months' for ILUGC. Let us try to make some
hay, while the sun is shining.
