My contention from the start has been that Linux does not support
BINARY-ONLY drivers and that as the linux kernel is updated on a user's
machine, he will need to recompile the drivers other than for one or two
specific cases ( a. The kernel interface layer is provided by the vendor
or b. The kernel headers and symbols remain exactly the same between the
two versions of the kernel)
inspite of having given you specific examples ( which you seem to ignore
completely ) I dont know why you continue to blow this horn... You are
either (a) pushing an agenda and/or (b) clueless about how these things
really work on a stable distro :)
eg. ( once again something specific here ) - the vmware kernel modules
for their vmware-server download, is from the U1 days kernel on
centos-4, they have not needed to rebuild anything since then, their
drivers work fine for all kernels upto now. And to give you an idea of
what that translates into, there have been over 900 modifications to the
kernel since vmware built that .ko set ( bugfix, enhancements, new
drivers being added, driver updates, stability fixs, security fixs etc ).
