Then here is a question for you : When was the last time you did a
kernel upgrade on Windows ? afaik, XP had 1 kernel update, and that too
was a patch into filesystem code to fix a security issue.
Oops, so there are kernel updates for windows??? Whenever I installed
any of those hot fixes for windows, i ve had to reinstall windows
jeopardizing every thing else. The only kind of update i ever do on
windows is virus scan db!
This is absolutely not true.
Maybe I don't agree. Some times, the drivers expect specific things
from the kernel or just are too coupled to it. Again, I presently
don't have concrete examples on hand, but I ve installed new kernels
and reverted because I didn't want to compile the drivers. There are
cases where I just copied the ko file from the previous kernel and it
worked. But, I am not sure that happens every time.
if I have the time, just do it myself and
push it back upstream.
Some times, the "if" is a very big question and can have people use
the second boot until something stabilizes
you seem to be pointing fingers at these 'linux developers' but you seem
to forget there is no single entity that is the linux-developers,
contributions come in many and varied forms.
But I thought the topic was about non-developer linux users! I don't
expect them (in fact even a developer me) to contribute to the kernel!
Linux isnt Windows, what you get with Linux comes with a few 'issues'
but there are workarounds to most such issues.
Agreed.
Also, I dont see why people seem to moan and groan about driver support
in Linux anymore. eg. OSX supports a very small subset of devices that
Linux does - how many times do you see people on OSX complain about such
things ?
The eye-candy??? Probably thats what keeps the OSXers happy?
